Well-being Services
Pennine Mencap runs a variety of different services focused on health and well-being. We aim to provide fun, informative sessions to improve our Service Users' general health
Health Club:
Health Club is of the utmost importance to our service users. We learn together about all manner of different healthy lifestyle and diet choices – our activity leaders plan sessions around different food groups, where our users learn the importance of a balanced diet.
Furthermore, we send each participant of Health Club home with a healthy, nutritious recipe card for them to make at home. We focus on healthy, easy-to-prepare meals with a focus tied into the week’s session.

Walking Group:
Walking Group ties in closely with Health Club – following the Monday morning Health Club and a nutritious lunch, our group go out and about exploring the green spaces of Oldham and the surrounding areas. We leave Pennine Mencap HQ after lunch and make our way to a local park or beauty spot, either on foot or by public transport, should we choose to go further afield.
Our regular Walking Group spots include Alexandra Park, Daisy Nook, and Chadderton Hall Park, but we end up all around and about the borough! Last year, our Pennine Mencap walking team undertook a Halloween-themed sponsored walk around Ladybower Reservoir, where we raised over £500 for the charity.

Our Gym:
We are proud to have our own gym here at Pennine Mencap.
Service users can access the gym by appointment. This is to ensure staff are available to keep everyone safe. More tailored workout routines and assistance can be requested from our gym coach, Jordan.
Our service users tell us:
“I like going to the gym here. I feel too nervous to go to other gyms because there is so much going on. I don’t know how to choose but there is only one of each machine here, and that helps”.
“It’s nice and quiet. It isn’t too big, and I already know the staff”.

Sports Activities:
In conjunction with our Health Club and focus on lifestyle improvements, sport is a key element of what we do at Pennine Mencap.
One of our favourite sports is walking football. We have held countless indoor walking footie events since 2018, typically at Hurst Community Centre. These are inclusive, friendly and fun, offering an easy way for adults of all abilities to get involved in the beautiful game. Not to mention a little bit competitive when we have an informal mini tournament to end the session!
We also encourage our service users to participate in a selection of physical activities, with our resources including everything needed for sports ranging from badminton to boules, volleyball to netball, and everything in between.
